Eye hooks are critical fittings used with dead-end and suspension clamps to support Aerial Bundled Cable lines. They carry both mechanical load and environmental stress, so every piece must be tested before installation.

Eye hooks hold the entire weight and tension of the cable during and after installation. If one fails, the line can drop or break, creating serious safety risks on site. The Tensile Test ensures the hook can handle this load without bending or breaking. The Galvanizing Test ensures the zinc coating protects the hook from rust and corrosion, keeping it reliable for years in outdoor conditions.

In this blog, you will learn how to perform the Tensile and Galvanizing Tests on eye hooks - the Mechanical (Load) Test as per IS 2486 Part 1 and REC-35, and the Galvanizing Test as per IS 2633.

Note: Please use proper tools, procedures and personal protective equipment to avoid injury.

Tensile Test

Step 1: Mount the eye hook in the tensile testing machine with the load aligned to the hook axis. Tighten the grips and ensure it is securely held in the fixture. Galvanizing Test:

Step 1: Take a fresh sample. Make sure the surface is free from grease, paint, or varnish. Bring the sample to normal room temperature before testing. Eye hook test- preparation

Step 2: Test solution should be prepared as per IS 2633. The specific gravity of the solution shall be 1.186 at eighteen degrees Celsius, plus or minus two degrees. Then immerse the sample completely in the test solution for one minute. Repeat this process for 4 successive dips, each lasting for 1 Min. Rinsing eye hook and cleaning it under running water and wiping it dryStep 4: The material passes this test if, at the end of the specified number of dips, when the test piece is finally rinsed and wiped dry, it does not show any adherent red deposit of copper upon the base metal. As you can see, this test confirms that the Axis Eye Hook’s galvanizing is continuous and firmly adherent, since no red copper deposit was observed. This ensures excellent corrosion resistance and long-term durability under outdoor conditions. Congratulations, you have successfully completed the test. We hope you now have a clear understanding of how to conduct Tensile and Galvanizing test. At Axis, every eye hook is tested for both mechanical strength and galvanizing quality in our NABL accredited in-house testing lab. We never compromise on quality, which is why millions of Axis AB Cable Accessories are installed across the world.
