How to select Heat Shrinkable Tubing?

The right tubing depends on the cable, voltage, application, and protection requirement.

1
Step 1

Voltage level

Select low-voltage or medium-voltage tubing based on the electrical system where the tubing will be used.

2
Step 2

Shrink ratio

Choose the shrink ratio based on the diameter difference between the supplied size and the recovered size. Common options include 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1.

3
Step 3

Wall type

Select medium wall, heavy wall, or dual wall tubing based on the level of mechanical protection, insulation, and sealing required.

4
Step 4

Electrical requirement

Use anti-tracking or stress controlled tubing for medium-voltage terminations and joints where tracking resistance or electrical stress control is required.

The right tubing depends on the cable, voltage, application, and protection requirement. Voltage level: Select low-voltage or medium-voltage tubing based on the electrical system where the tubing will be used. Shrink ratio: Choose the shrink ratio based on the diameter difference between the supplied size and the recovered size. Common options include 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1. Wall type: Select medium wall, heavy wall, or dual wall tubing based on the level of mechanical protection, insulation, and sealing required. Electrical requirement: Use anti-tracking or stress controlled tubing for medium-voltage terminations and joints where tracking resistance or electrical stress control is required.
Heat shrinkable tubing is used to insulate, seal, and protect cables, wire bundles, splices, terminations, busbars, and connector-to-cable transitions.
Medium wall tubing is used for LV cable insulation and protection. Heavy wall tubing is used for medium-voltage applications where stronger mechanical, environmental, abrasion, corrosion, and chemical protection is required.
Adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing has an inner adhesive layer that bonds to the surface during shrinking. It helps seal the connection against water, moisture, fluids, and other contaminants.
Shrink ratio shows how much the tubing reduces in diameter after heating. For example, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 tubing recover to a smaller size depending on the application and diameter difference.
Anti-tracking heat shrink tubing is used in low-voltage and medium-voltage termination and jointing kits for insulation, tracking resistance, erosion resistance, and protection against accidental flashover.
Stress controlled heat shrink tubing is used in medium-voltage terminations and joints to control electrical stress around the semiconducting layer end.
Busbar insulating heat shrink tubing is used on busbars in switchgear and substations to provide insulation protection and reduce the risk of short circuit and electrical leakage.
Selection depends on voltage level, cable or busbar size, shrink ratio, wall type, sealing requirement, operating temperature, and special needs such as anti-tracking, flame retardancy, halogen-free performance, or high-temperature resistance.
