Lead Engineer - PV Combiner Box Product Development

Overview

Axis is expanding into solar Balance of System products and is looking for a hands-on engineer to design, prototype, and validate DC String Combiner Boxes for utility-scale and commercial PV installations across 1000 V and 1500 V systems. This is a leadership-track role covering the full product lifecycle from concept and design through prototype, testing, production, and field feedback.

Requirements

Education

B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical, Power, or Electronics Engineering.

Experience

5-10 years in PV system design, LV switchgear, or product development of DC side components. Prior experience in developing solar junction boxes or DC distribution boards preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

Product Design and Specification

Develop detailed technical specifications for 1000 V and 1500 V DC combiner boxes.
Create schematic diagrams, wiring layouts, and component selections to IEC 61439-2, IEC 60269-6, and IEC 61643-31.
Finalise bill of materials covering enclosures, fuses, SPDs, isolators, monitoring modules, terminals, glands, and busbars.

Prototyping and Testing

Oversee prototype builds with Axis factory teams and component suppliers.
Conduct validation tests covering IP65/IP66 ingress, temperature rise, dielectric performance, and mechanical integrity.
Liaise with third-party test laboratories for IEC certification and type testing.

Manufacturing and Design for Manufacturability

Work with production teams to optimise manufacturability, wiring layouts, assembly jigs, and quality assurance processes.
Support the sourcing team in vendor evaluation for critical components.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with design, supply chain, and commercial teams to align the combiner box with Axis's solar BOS strategy.
Interface with EPCs and customers to incorporate field feedback into design improvements.

Documentation and Compliance

Prepare drawings in AutoCAD or Creo, along with test reports, datasheets, and O&M manuals.
Ensure compliance with MNRE, IEC, and utility specifications across all product documentation.

Required Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of PV string design and DC current calculations.
Hands-on experience with fuses, SPDs, disconnect switches, and IP-rated enclosures.
Familiarity with IEC 61439, IEC 60269, IEC 61643, UL 1741, and IS standards.
CAD drawing and bill of materials preparation skills.
Proficiency in component sourcing and vendor coordination.
